Response to Election Results

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Assalaamu ʿalaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh

In shaaʾ Allaah this e-mail finds you in the very best of health & ever-increasing eemaan!!!

The recent elections in which Donald Trump was elected as the President of the United States of America has taken nearly everyone by surprise, and understandably, our community has a lot of concern for this given the very negative things he has said during his campaign that were bigoted, sexist, racist, and, yes, anti-Muslim.

However, rather than making our response to this based on fear and misunderstanding, we must look toward our Creator and see what He Says, and then based our actions on His Guidance.  Alhamdulillaah, many Islamic organizations and Islamic figures, in the West and otherwise, have already spoken to this, so we would like to share these with everyone to provide some comfort and guidance in otherwise chaotic and worrisome times.

To begin with, Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi has addressed this very succinctly in a video available on YouTube, and we encourage everyone to take some time and watch it.

Secondly, the famous Muslim blog, Muslim Matters, has collected the statements of many Islamic figures in the West related to the election results and issues surrounding it.  You can find those here:

Lastly, CAIR Columbus has issued a statement that we all should read and we encourage you to contact them that in the event that something happens to you that you suspect is a violation of your rights.  Their message is below:

As-salaamu alaykum Brothers & Sisters,

O you who have attained to faith!  Seek aid in steadfast patience and prayer, for behold, Allah is with those who are patient in adversity.Holy Quran 2:153

We must not despair. America is bigger than any one man or woman. What makes America great is the strength of its institutions. And there was no vote on our institutions last night.

All minorities, including Muslims, have rights in this country. These rights come from our laws and are enshrined in our constitution.

We still have an independent judiciary and court system to protect and enforce our rights.  We still have the right not to be harassed or discriminated against at work, not to be discriminated against by the government, to be safe in public places, for our kids not to be harassed and bullied in schools. Let’s remember – we still have the same rights that we had yesterday. There was no vote on our rights last night.

Of course, we will have challenges. But we are also believers. We have to stay strong and keep faith in Allah (swt) and his blessings.

If you, your children, family or friends face any harassment or discrimination, please immediately call us at our office at 614-451-3232.

Sincerely,

CAIR’s message is absolutely correct – do not despair, and do not lose hope, and do not make this out to be bigger than it really is.  But remain smart, and report any incidents and take extra precautions.

If you need anything from us, please do not hesitate to contact us at (614) 262-1310 or by e-mail at info@masjidomarohio.org.
